Probably a dumb question but I have never seen this temp dir get so filled up. Mine has almost 2 gigs worth of files. Anything in a temp folder sould be temporary I thought... am I ok to kill everything in there?
Thanks
Its winXP sp2 all updates.
Can I delete all files in C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp?
It may depend. To be safe, you should reboot. After a reboot, you can delete everything from the temp folder.
Reply:Yes - Just delete the Temp directory and all files under it.
Reply:yes there just temporary files used for installing
Reply:set a restore point and a backup would be a good idea.
using control panel to delete temp files prevents mistakes.
do you have mbsa ?
Microsoft baseline security analyzer
Reply:Typically you can delete everything in the temp folder. However if you want to be sure, there is an easy way to check.
Simply make a folder inside the temp folder. For example, create the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp\My_Temp
Just copy everything inside the Temp folder into your new My_Temp folder. If you don't get any error messages (like "This file is in use"), you should be fine to delete it all.
Reply:yep.........do a ctrl + a to do a select all, then a shift + delete. the shift + delete command will bypass the recycle bin
Reply:I routinely do.
You should also check your system variables to find out where TEMP is pointing at. If TEMP is pointing at C:\Temp, then most of the files will end up there. Sometimes it's pointing at the user relative directory you mention in your question.
Check also C:\Windows\Temp. There's usually alot of junk there too. I only delete files/directories over 24 hours old.
Reply:It's a good idea to clean out all the temp files every so often. Web sites love to jam all sorts of useless crap onto you r computer, so feel free to wipe it all out.
Reply:Most temporary files can be deleted without any problem
Reply:use ccleaner to clean it
it will safely delete all "crap files" from your hard drive the first you run it will most likely delete like 4gb off.
here is a link to download it BTW it's free
